Abortion rights groups in a Texas county won a court victory on Tuesday after a judge granted a temporary restraining order to block the state’s ability to ban abortions.
The American Civil Liberties Union represented abortion providers in the civil lawsuit filed on Monday in Harris County, whose attorney said the temporary restraining order will remain in effect until a hearing on July 12, according to KHOU 11.
“Every day that clinics can remain open will save countless people from the life-altering risks and consequences of forced pregnancy,” the ACLU wrote on social media.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, one of the defendants listed in the lawsuit, issued an advisory on Friday after the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and said the state’s trigger ban, which bans abortion almost entirely, will not take effect for approximately two months or longer. However, he also warned that “abortion providers could be criminally liable for providing abortions starting today” based on the state’s “abortion prohibitions predating Roe.”
Texas is one of 13 states that has a trigger law set to go into effect in the coming weeks that would outlaw or severely restrict abortions.
It is not clear what the state could do if a local authority refuses to enforce the laws, which makes performing or assisting in an abortion a felony.

Other abortion providers that have been permitted to perform the procedure include Utah and Louisiana. Utah’s temporary restraining order, granted Monday, will be in effect for 14 days. A judge has set a hearing date for July 8 for Louisiana’s trigger laws.
