Uber is bringing the sharing back to its ride-sharing service two years after the feature was removed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The returning feature, UberX Share, will slash 20% from fares if riders are matched with co-riders heading in the same direction. Ride-sharing is returning to several cities throughout the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Portland, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh, the company announced Tuesday.
“We’ve designed UberX Share so that riders will arrive no more than 8 minutes later than an UberX ride,” a statement from Andrew Macdonald, Uber’s senior vice president, read. “This new shared rides offering will provide a more affordable, efficient and sustainable experience for riders, drivers, the cities we serve, and for Uber.”

UberX Share will be available in more cities over the summer.
Uber ended its mask mandate for passengers and drivers and began allowing customers to ride in the front seat in April, just one day after a federal judge in Florida struck down the federal mask mandate for public transportation.
