TikTok banned from state-issued phones in Kansas

Democratic Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly banned the social media app TikTok on all state-issued devices.

The ban is one of the first instituted by a Democratic governor. Republicans have typically led the charge against TikTok, arguing that it’s a state security threat because it collects data and its parent company’s links to the Chinese Communist Party. So far, at least 15 Republican governors have issued similar bans, according to the Associated Press.

Kelly’s move reflects increasing bipartisan agreement and concern about the dangers of the app, which is used by approximately two-thirds of teenagers. The recently passed $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill included a ban on TikTok on all state-issued government employees’ devices. A bill passed on Tuesday banned TikTok from all House of Representatives devices.

The main concern about TikTok from lawmakers is that its parent company, ByteDance, could give users’ data to the Chinese government or could push Chinese propaganda into users’ feeds.
