Boulder shooting suspect makes second courtroom appearance

The man accused of fatally shooting 10 people in March at a Boulder, Colorado, supermarket made his second appearance in court Tuesday, as a judge scheduled a September hearing to review evidence in the case.

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is the 22-year-old suspected gunman from the mass shooting that occurred on March 22 who was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. His hearing lasted two minutes and did not include any detailed discussions about the case, including his defense team’s claim that Alissa suffers from an unspecified mental condition.

Alissa’s defense and legal team needed about three months to evaluate his “mental illness” and evidence gathered by investigators before proceeding, defense attorney Kathryn Herold said at Alissa’s first hearing March 25.

A law enforcement official briefed about the shooting previously told the Associated Press under a condition of anonymity that the suspect’s family told investigators they believed Alissa was suffering from a type of mental illness, including delusions. The official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The courtroom Tuesday was closed to the public due to COVID-19 safety restrictions. A livestream was provided for the hearing, as well as a present photographer, which showed Alissa masked while wearing an orange and white jail uniform.

The suspect is accused of killing nine residents who were either shopping or working at the time of the shooting, as well as one police officer who entered the store.

He is charged with attempted first-degree murder for allegedly firing at 26 other people, including 11 law enforcement officers. He also is accused of unlawfully possessing 10 high-capacity ammunition magazines, which were previously banned in the state after other mass shootings occurred.

Investigators have not released a possible motive for the shooting.

There was no indication Alissa had ever visited the supermarket before, District Attorney Michael Dougherty previously said. Alissa is from the suburb of Arvada, roughly 30 minutes from Boulder.
