Uber announced Wednesday that for the first time, it will allow users to see how many drivers gave them a one-star rating, a five-star rating, and other ratings in between.
The move is geared at incentivizing good behavior during rides. Previously, Uber riders were only able to see their average rating.
“We’re making it easier than ever to see exactly how your rating is calculated, and for the first time, we’re showing you the good (and the bad) ratings you received,” Zach Singleton, a privacy product manager at Uber, wrote in a company announcement on Wednesday. “We hope that by giving users a peek into how their rating is calculated, we can help encourage positive experiences between riders and drivers on every trip.”

Uber also announced this week that the city with the lowest average rider rating is New York City, followed by Seattle and Washington, D.C. On the other hand, San Antonio was the city with the best average rider rating, followed by St. Louis and Nashville, Tennessee.
Uber said all identifying information regarding driver ratings would be anonymous for safety reasons.
Finding the driver rating breakdown is slightly complicated and requires a deep dive into Uber’s app.
Uber users can do this by opening the app’s settings menu and tapping Privacy and then Privacy Center. Once there, users have to swipe to the right and select the option: “Would you like to see a summary of how you use Uber?” Lastly, one has to scroll to the “Browse your data” section and tap on “View my ratings.”
Uber relies on users and drivers rating each other to hold both parties accountable during rides, with each side being at risk of being deactivated from the platform if they repeatedly get low ratings.

To keep their ratings high, Uber advises riders to clean up after themselves, buckle their seat belts, be ready on time, be respectful, and avoid slamming the door.
