New bill would require DUI drivers to pay child support in fatal crashes

The Alabama Legislature is considering a new bill that would require drunk drivers to pay child support if they cause an accident killing someone who is a parent or legal guardian.

Alabama State Rep. Proncey Robertson introduced the DUI and Child Compensation and Recovery Act that would require convicted DUI drivers to pay child support until the child turns 19, which is the state’s age of majority.

The legislation comes as a SafeWise report shows Alabama is the seventh-worst state for drunk driving deaths.

If the bill passes, the amount of support would be determined by the child’s financial situation.
