Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt won Nevada’s Republican primary for Senate on Tuesday and will go on to challenge Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in the general election.

Laxalt embraced former President Donald Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election results based on unfounded claims of systemic fraud, and allies of the former president campaigned in the state on Laxalt’s behalf.
Other Republicans who may be eyeing a 2024 presidential bid also campaigned for Laxalt, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Laxalt comes from a political family that has held office in both Nevada and New Mexico.
Laxalt maintained a wide lead in polls for most of the contest, but in recent days, retired Army Capt. Sam Brown surged in polling. Brown was endorsed by the state Republican Party, which also broke with Trump in its gubernatorial endorsement. Brown was wounded in 2008 during a deployment to Afghanistan by an IED explosion and received a purple heart.

The nonpartisan election analyst group Cook Political Report ranked Nevada’s general election Senate race as a toss-up, making the seat a possible pickup opportunity for Republicans attempting to win a majority in the upper chamber.
