Democrats in the City of Brotherly Love have created a crime wave in Philadelphia that turned it into the “city of homicide and death.” They have absolutely no idea how to fix it. Record levels of homicides have plagued the city for the last few years, and it has become a national embarrassment.
Desperate to try anything, Philly seems headed for its latest ineffective and pointless policy: mandating a 10 p.m. curfew for teenagers.
The curfew was initially implemented for people under 18 over the summer but expired at the end of September. The city government is poised to make it permanent, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. But the situation in the city has become even more dire. A recent video of teenagers ransacking a Wawa store went viral, adding to Philly’s humiliation. It’s the latest in a series of unfortunate events that show how inept the city is at fighting crime. Democratic officeholders have repeatedly failed to implement effective policies to make it consistently safe for its 1.61 million residents.

This 10 p.m, curfew was implemented to make the city look like it was trying something, anything, about the crime wave. Over the summer, the curfew did nothing to stop crime or protect people. Indeed, studies have repeatedly shown that curfews are “pointless” and have “little to no impact on crime or victimization rates.” It’s just an authoritarian measure by a clueless local regime. There is one way to stop criminals from holding the city hostage: Police aggressively and hold them accountable for their crimes.
Unfortunately, Philadelphia’s government doesn’t want to do that. Instead, Democrats running the city choose to follow a misguided and ineffective allegiance to left-wing criminal justice reforms. As matters stand, criminals are prioritized by the government, and the innocent continue to suffer and remain endangered.
The curfew is merely the latest production in the city government’s political theater. Nothing will change, and the bureaucrats in charge will continue to feign concern and sympathy over those who suffer because of the massive problem they have caused.
