Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, were seated across the aisle from the rest of the royal family at the service of Thanksgiving on Friday, a visual reminder of the emotional rift that has reportedly driven the family apart.
The royal couple were placed not near heir apparent Prince Charles or Prince William, Harry’s brother, but instead between the husband of Prince Andrew’s daughter Princess Eugenie and Lady Sarah, a niece of Queen Elizabeth II.

The duke and duchess of Sussex were photographed talking to both of Andrew’s daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and their husbands, with all smiling in photos. However, William and Duchess Kate did not appear to look at them when walking to their seats.
Royal aides were attempting to avoid a repeat of the last event both families attended at Westminster Abbey in March 2020, which showed the impact of the apparent rift between Harry and his family, the Daily Mail reported. The brothers were last seen together in July, when both attended an unveiling of a statue of their mother, Princess Diana.

After it was announced in February 2021 that they wouldn’t return as working royals, the couple moved to California, and they have given multiple interviews detailing explosive allegations against the monarchy, including claims that a member of the royal family was concerned about the color of their unborn son’s skin and that aides ignored the duchess when she said she was suicidal. Harry said he was cut off financially, and neither has spoken to William.

Andrew did not attend Friday’s event after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, and the queen also pulled out of the service after experiencing “discomfort” at Thursday’s festivities. The service, which occurred during her Platinum Jubilee, celebrates the monarch as the head of the church of England. Charles represented the throne in his mother’s absence.
Following the service, the royal family was invited to attend a reception at Guildhall, hosted by the lord mayor. Harry and Meghan did not attend after promising the queen they would keep a low profile and only attend official events, the outlet reported.
