Johnny Depp’s lawyers Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez made their first public comments since leaving the Fairfax, Virginia, court where a jury found that Amber Heard defamed their client, saying Depp’s ability to take responsibility for his actions helped restore his reputation.
The lawyers appeared on morning talk shows Wednesday, touting the jury’s decision and saying the key was “focusing on the facts and evidence.”

“Johnny took ownership of a lot of things, and it seemed at times, and perhaps it came through to the jury, that she had an answer for everything,” Chew told Good Morning America. “She wasn’t taking accountability for anything, and I think that made a difference.”
Camille Vasquez, who was just promoted to partner at law firm Brown Rudnick, added that claims of the outcome serving as a setback for domestic violence victims were disappointing.
“We encourage any victim to come forward. Domestic violence doesn’t have a gender,” Vasquez said. “We believe that the verdict speaks for itself. The facts are what they were. The jury made a unanimous decision based on those facts.”
‘MOVING BACKWARD’: AMBER HEARD SLAMS JOHNNY DEPP’S FIRST TIKTOK POST
Heard released a statement Tuesday night blasting Depp’s first TikTok post, which told fans he would be moving forward with them.
“As Johnny Depp says he’s ‘moving forward,’ women’s rights are moving backward,” Heard spokeswoman Cathy Russon tweeted. “The verdict’s message to victims of domestic violence is … be afraid to stand up and speak out.”
Chew and Vasquez also appeared on Today, denying there were social media campaigns to smear Heard.

“That is utterly baseless,” Chew told Savannah Guthrie, adding that the claims were “absolutely absurd.”
Vasquez added that any suggestions of Depp paying for the spread of negative content on social media were “categorically false.”
Chew noted that the trial’s outcome has lifted “the weight of the world” off Depp’s shoulders.
The lawyers would not comment on any legal developments regarding Heard’s plans to appeal, except to say they are confident with how the case proceeded.
“We feel very confident that there are no errors that would justify any kind of successful appeal,” Chew said.

Both agreed they have gained notoriety due to the high-profile case. Vasquez noted it has been “overwhelming and surreal.”
“To the extent that I can encourage young women to stay in school and maybe inspire them to pursue a legal career, then it’s all worth it,” Vasquez said.
