San Francisco residents just had their second successful recall election of left-wing politicians of the past five months. But it’s not clear if they have learned their lesson or if they will simply support more of the same the next time they head to the ballot box.
San Francisco voters recalled District Attorney Chesa Boudin, the man who views criminals as victims and made it his goal to pursue lesser charges for criminals (even dropping charges outright) and empty out jails. In Boudin’s San Francisco, repeat criminals were free to commit crime after crime and be let out back on the street, oftentimes resulting in them escalating to more violent offenses.
Voters decided they had enough and have now sent Boudin packing. In February, the city had similarly recalled three school board members who had prioritized racial politics and renaming schools over children’s education. Both Boudin and the school board members were far-left ideologues, using their positions to destroy the justice system and education system in the name of racial “equity.”
San Francisco is a city where roughly 63% of voters are Democrats. The city’s last Republican mayor left office in 1964. It is great news that voters rejected these four politicians and their toxic racial politics despite their efforts to paint the recall as some Republican plot. Yet the fact remains that voters elected all four of them in the first place, and they would not have had to hold recall elections if they treated their ballots more seriously in 2018 and 2019 when all four were voted into office.
This entire ordeal will be useless if San Francisco simply votes for more of the same on its school board or in the district attorney’s office. Perhaps voters simply needed to shake off their apathy: All three school board members were recalled with more votes than they received in 2018, and Boudin is on track for the same result compared to his 2019 victory. But those voters have to stay invested in future elections because left-wing ideologues won’t roll over or disappear after just one resounding rejection.
Voters across California must decide whether homelessness, crime, lowering education standards, and a toxic obsession with race are what they want. This year, San Franciscans have finally decided to say no. Now, they just have to do it again — and again and again.
