The comments by McCarthy (R-CA) come just ahead of the Jan. 6 select committee’s prime-time hearing in which the panel has asserted it would reveal new information on the events surrounding the deadly siege.
Top Trump allies, including McCarthy, have long blasted the panel, alleging it was a “partisan witch hunt,” with some GOP lawmakers arguing that the committee has failed to place a strong enough focus on security problems, with some alleging that Pelosi (D-CA) may have had the authority to authorize additional resources to aid and prevent the attack.
JAN. 6 COMMITTEE GEARS UP FOR PRIME-TIME HEARING
McCarthy has repeatedly alleged that Pelosi has failed to provide information related to her office’s decisions on Capitol security ahead of (and on the day of) the attack and may have had knowledge of “potential security threats to the Capitol” in the days leading up to the riot. He asserted that Republicans will release their own report on the GOP investigation led by Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) that they argue will “answer the questions that this select committee is ignoring.”
While Trump allies argue that the select committee’s investigation should include looking into Pelosi, McCarthy acknowledged that security decisions didn’t solely fall on the speaker when pressed on whether they would call on McConnell (R-KY) to answer the same questions as Pelosi since his authority was equivalent to the speaker’s in the upper chamber.
“Yes, because we want to get to the bottom of why this Capitol was so ill-prepared. There’s reports that — was offered the National Guard as early as Jan. 2. We do not know why they weren’t here,” McCarthy said.
“I’ve seen intel reporting after this that watched that the crowd got out of control. People were warned ahead of time. They were offering of the National Guard, and we’d like to know to the bottom of why they weren’t there,” he said.
McCarthy, one of five Republicans along with Jordan, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry, Rep. Andy Biggs, and Rep. Mo Brooks to be subpoenaed by the panel, went on to bash the committee’s decision to move forward with subpoenaing lawmakers.

“It is the most political and least legitimate committee. … It has used congressional subpoenas to attack Republicans, violate due process, and infringe on political speech practices,” he said. “It has actually been caught altering evidence, including text messages from our ranking member Jim Jordan. She has permanently damaged the House.”
