Mail deliverers will need to listen to dogs’ barks if they wish to avoid their bites when visiting these cities, as over 5,400 postal employees were attacked by dogs last year.
A total of 32 cities reached the Postal Service’s top 25 ranking for having the most dog-biting incidents in 2021. Cleveland, Ohio, topped the list with 58 recorded attacks, with Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Flint, Michigan; Flushing, New York; and Indianapolis, Indiana, tying for 25th place, each with 15 attacks, according to USPS.

“The Postal Service takes the safety of our employees as seriously as we take our commitment to delivering America’s mail,” said USPS Occupational Safety and Health Senior Director Linda DeCarlo. “Each year, nearly 6,000 employees are attacked by dogs while on their routes. Please deliver for us by being responsible pet owners and make sure your dogs are secured when our carrier comes to your mailbox.”
Other cities with the most recorded 2021 dog attacks include Houston, Texas, with 54; Kansas City, Missouri, with 48; Los Angeles, California, with 44; and Louisville, Kentucky, with 42. A delivery man in Houston had recently been bitten by a dog in the leg even after receiving proper training to protect himself from dog attacks.

California topped the list of states with the most recorded dog bites in 2021, with 656 incidents. Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, Illinois, Florida, Washington, and Kentucky tied for the No. 2 spot. All of the states besides Washington and Kentucky experienced fewer dog bite incidents in 2021 compared to 2020.
The Postal Service has asked dog owners to keep their dogs in the house, behind a fence, or on a leash when a mail deliverer is present, even when their dog is known to be friendly or has never bitten anyone.
