Multiple employees who were involved in writing a letter criticizing Musk for his activities in the “public sphere” were fired hours after reports of the letter emerged on Thursday, according to a New York Times report published Friday.

“The letter, solicitations, and general process made employees feel uncomfortable, intimidated and bullied, and/or angry because the letter pressured them to sign onto something that did not reflect their views,” SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said in emails viewed by the outlet. “We have too much critical work to accomplish and no need for this kind of overreaching activism.”
“Blanketing thousands of people across the company with repeated unsolicited emails and asking them to sign letters and fill out unsponsored surveys during the work day is not acceptable,” Shotwell continued. “Please stay focused on the SpaceX mission, and use your time to do your best work. This is how we will get to Mars.”
It is unclear how many employees were fired.
The letter criticized Musk for being a “frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us.” Musk’s recent messaging on Twitter and elsewhere “does not reflect our work, our mission, or our values,” the authors argued, asking SpaceX’s leadership to address Musk’s violations of its “no a**holes” policy.
The company paid a flight attendant $250,000 to settle sexual misconduct allegations against Musk, according to reports last month. Musk denied these claims as an “utterly untrue” attempt to stop his acquisition of Twitter.

Musk’s Twitter conduct has been a point of tension in the past. While the billionaire has used his account to stop people from threatening other accounts, he has also shared controversial tweets and memes, some of which had the power to move markets.
SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.
