EXCLUSIVE — A majority of adults say transgender athletes should compete in sports in accordance with their biological sex, a new Washington Examiner-YouGov poll has found.
The poll found that 53% of adults either somewhat or strongly opposed to including transgender athletes on sports teams based on their claimed gender identity.

The results revealed a substantial partisan gap on the issue, with 80% of Republicans indicating they opposed allowing athletes to compete based on gender identity, while only 34% of Democrats opposed, along with 51% of independents.
Carl Bialik, YouGov’s vice president of data science and U.S. politics editor, told the Washington Examiner that the results were fairly consistent with previous polls on the issue.
The poll also found that a majority (53%) support requiring K-12 schools to inform parents if their child requests to be addressed by different pronouns.
But on this issue, unlike that of transgender athletes, there was a much smaller partisan gap among respondents, with 61% of Republicans saying parents should be notified, along with 52% of Democrats and 49% of independents. However, a sizable 17% of respondents said they were unsure.
The issue of transgender athletes competing based on their gender identity has garnered substantial cultural controversy, especially within the context of women’s sports, which have seen male athletes who identify as the opposite sex dominate competitions against biological women.
