McDonald’s will begin gradually reopening some of its restaurants in Ukraine in areas where fighting is less prominent just months after temporarily shutting down business amid the Russian invasion.

The fast-food chain will begin reopening some of its restaurants in the capital of Kyiv and western Ukraine, joining a handful of other Western companies that have opened their doors amid the invasion as a symbol of support and a return to normalcy, according to the Associated Press. McDonald’s closed several of its restaurants in March after Russia invaded but continued to pay more than 10,000 employees amid the closure.

MCDONALD’S LOSES MILLIONS OVER SHUTTERED STORES IN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE

“We’ve spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen,” Paul Pomroy, corporate senior vice president of international operated markets, told employees. “In recent months, the belief that this would support a small but important sense of normalcy has grown stronger.”

It’s unclear how many of the fast-food chain’s restaurants will be reopened or how quickly the process will occur. McDonald’s has 109 locations in Ukraine that were temporarily closed amid the war.

As part of its reopening, McDonald’s will start working with vendors to resupply the restaurants and implement safety procedures as the war continues to rage in the country.

The burger chain also closed its 850 restaurants in Russia in March, selling the stores to a franchise owner and closing business three decades after opening its first location in the country. The closures in Russia cost the company about $55 million per month and marked the first time McDonald’s had exited a major market, the report said.
