“We think that they do indeed have it in their power to repel the Russians and to get them back to their pre-February the 24th position,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told reporters in Madrid. “And that’s certainly what [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky] said he wants to do, and he’s set out a plan for doing that.”

That prognosis lends British credibility to a more favorable outlook for Ukraine than the one that came into being over the last several weeks, as a Russian tactical victory in eastern Ukraine and the threat of famine due to the blockade of Ukrainian food exports reinforced Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position after his initial failure to take Kyiv earlier this year. The Russian retreat from Snake Island earlier Thursday also afforded Johnson a concrete example of Ukrainian forces conducting a successful counteroffensive.

“They do see a way in which they can change the dynamic this year, in the next few months,” Johnson said at his post-NATO summit press conference. “And I think it means we have to help them as much as we can. Because they’ve shown that they can resist, they’ve shown their amazing, amazing ability to fight back.”
