Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin has bounced back from a 10-point deficit in New York’s Republican gubernatorial primary race to take a six-point lead over former White House aide Andrew Giuliani with just days until voting ends, according to a new survey shared with Secrets.
Zeldin leads Giuliani 34.5% to 28% in the new poll from John Zogby Strategies. The Utica-based pollster had Giuliani over Zeldin 35%-25% a month ago. Another Republican, former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, has moved little and sits at 17% in advance of the June 28 primary election. Businessman Harry Wilson is at 14%, two-points higher than in Zogby’s May survey.
Giuliani, son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, leads Zeldin in the Big Apple. Zeldin does better in the New York suburbs and upstate.
Giuliani has remained close to former President Donald Trump. Zeldin won former Vice President Mike Pence’s endorsement this week.
Early voting has been underway for weeks in the volatile primary race for governor.
On the Democratic side, Gov. Kathy Hochul appears untouchable. The poll analysis said that she “holds a commanding lead” with 55% to 22% for Rep. Tom Suozzi and 19% for New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
The pollster said that momentum is on Zeldin’s side, though Giuliani’s supporters said that he is also on a roll, playing up fighting crime as a major issue, as it was when his father ran and won the race for New York mayor in the mid-1990s.
“This GOP race has been a dynamic one. Despite being hammered for months with a heavy negative advertising blitz by Wilson, Zeldin has gone from a 10-point deficit in the May poll to a 6.5-point lead. In fact, we saw his lead jump from 2 points on Tuesday to 4 points on Wednesday, and finally 6.5 points by the time the poll closed Thursday. He could bring even more momentum in the days that follow,” said the analysis shown below.
