Woman fatally shot outside Texas Cracker Barrel while protecting employee

A woman was fatally shot outside of the Cracker Barrel where she worked while trying to protect a co-worker from an attempted robbery in north Harris County, Texas, according to authorities.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the woman, identified as Robin Baucom, a 59-year-old grandmother, was shot after she opened one of the restaurant’s doors to let an employee in at 6:15 a.m. Saturday as an armed suspect attempted to grab her employee’s purse, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“She was a protector, not only with her family but with the ones she worked with. She protected the workers and gave her life for them,” Billy Crumpton, Baucom’s brother, told Fox 26 Houston.

Her employee was first approached by a “black male wearing dark clothing” who exited a gray Dodge Charger as she waited to be let into the building by Baucom, police said.

“The suspect produced a handgun and attempted to grab the employee’s purse. The suspect fired into the restaurant and the manager was shot. The suspect then ran to the Dodge Charger and fled the scene southbound on the North Freeway in the vehicle,” the police said in a statement.

Baucom, who worked at Cracker Barrel for 34 years, was taken to the hospital in critical condition where she later succumbed to her injuries, according to officials.

“Robin was one of the hardest working women I have ever seen. It didn’t matter if the job required 12 hours or 23 hours, she was there. Many nights she didn’t get home until 2 or 3 a.m. She worked for Cracker Barrell for 34 years,” her family said in a statement. “She loved her job, her customers and her employees and her family. She absolutely worshipped her three grandchildren, two boys, Brent and Brandon, her newest granddaughter, Lilah who is 10 months old. She had three children, Mark, Matthew and Tina whom she loved with her entire heart. They always had a mom with out reaching hands if they ever needed anything. She was always trying to help wherever she was needed. She is our hero and we hope she will be remembered as a hero because she lost her life trying to protect her employees and Cracker Barrel. She was always taking care of business wherever she was needed. Please if you know anything call and let someone know.”

Police said the suspect was still at large. As of Monday, the Cracker Barrel location is temporarily closed, according to Google Maps.
