A leaked note revealed that CNN is attempting to cut down on its usage of the “breaking news” designation for news stories.
CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht wrote that the company will move away from overusing breaking news alerts that alarm viewers and readers, according to the note obtained by Axios on Thursday.
“It has become such a fixture on every channel and network that its impact has become lost on the audience,” Licht wrote.

“We are truth-tellers, focused on informing, not alarming our viewers,” he explained.
There have been complaints about the banner from “people both inside and outside the organization,” according to Licht.
To remedy this, Licht said that CNN Bureau Chief Sam Feist is leading a team to construct style guidelines for breaking news across the network.
“It certainly will need tweaks, so we are open to feedback, but this is a great starting point to try to make ‘Breaking News’ mean something BIG is happening.”
