Active-duty airman sets himself on fire outside DC’s Israeli Embassy

A man was taken in an ambulance to the hospital on Sunday after setting himself on fire outside Washington, D.C.‘s Israeli Embassy.

Hours after the shocking incident, the Air Force said the man was an active-duty airman, according to multiple reports.

“On Sunday, 2/25, at around 1:00 p.m., a man set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C.,” a spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy told the Washington Examiner. “The man is unknown. No embassy staff were injured and are safe.”

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, a spokesperson for DC Fire and EMS said Secret Service extinguished the fire.

“The individual was transported to the hospital with critical life threatening injuries,” DC Fire and EMS said.

Pictures and videos shared on social media Sunday afternoon showed police and multiple agencies outside the embassy. The incident comes as Israel continues its war against Hamas, which killed roughly 1,200 people in the Jewish state on Oct. 7 of last year.

The Israeli Embassy told the Washington Examiner, “This is still an ongoing situation and we do not have information to share.”
