The Metro system is changing, so the map that guides its riders needs to change, too.
While the transit agency crafts a new vision for the iconic map, the blog Greater Greater Washington has sponsored an unofficial contest of its own.
Now 17 maps are vying for the best design. The winners won’t get to see their work in every station but they can claim some bragging rights.
The challenge was to keep the easy-to-understand-while-on-a-crowded-train appearance while adding new information.
The transit agency plans to reconfigure some trains on the Blue and Yellow lines, which will affect the Green and Orange lines. Then, the massive Dulles Rail extension project will add another line entirely, frequently dubbed the Silver Line though no such coloration has been officially made. Then there’s the virtual tunnel between Farragut North and West stations.
Now riders and readers can vote for their favorite. Also, a crew of judges (full disclosure: I’m one of them) will pick a winner.
The polls are open until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, so vote now before it’s too late.
