Tammy Murphy puts NRA in her crosshairs as she fights to claim top spot in New Jersey Senate contest

New Jersey first lady Tammy Murphy, a Democrat, decreed gun control the major topic of her campaign, and she slammed the National Rifle Association in her first televised advertisement in the race to replace Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ).

In her ad titled Cowards, Murphy stood outside the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, addressing the gun lobbying industry, saying it’s “where cowards work.”

“This is the NRA’s world headquarters. It’s where cowards work,” Murphy says in the ad. “They know their guns are killing our kids, but they don’t care.”

Murphy pledged to push for gun control legislation if elected to the Senate, pointing to specific policy ideas that she would endorse.

“In the Senate, I’ll fight for universal background checks, to end immunity for gun-makers, and let’s ban military assault-style weapons once and for all,” Murphy said. “I’m Tammy Murphy, and I will make it my mission to take down the NRA. I can’t be bought. I won’t be bullied.”

Despite her ties to top Democrats in New Jersey, the Murphy campaign has lost momentum since its beginning. She has faced criticism of nepotism due to her marriage to Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ). If elected, she and her husband would hold half of New Jersey’s four statewide elected offices.

Murphy trails behind Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) in the most recent poll. She lost three straight county conventions to Kim trying secure the Democratic nomination before the state’s primary in June. Menendez, currently battling an indictment over taking bribes for political favors, has not said whether he will run for reelection.
