The National Park Service predicted the cherry blossoms in Washington will be at their peak between March 23 and 26.
This date corresponds with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which will start on March 20. Once reaching peak bloom, the Tidal Basin cherry blossoms are anticipated to last between 10 days and two weeks, depending on weather conditions.
“Emerging from the warmest January on record, this has been a particularly puzzling year to read the trees and establish a projected date for peak bloom,” NPS National Mall and Memorial Parks Superintendent Jeffrey Reinbold said on Thursday. “Once again, due to the warmer than average temperatures, the trees never reach dormancy, which is what we use to calculate when the blooms will emerge.”

NPS analyzes long-term forecasts, historical records, and the trees’ physical appearance in its peak bloom prediction. The trees are cared for all year by the service.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will visit Washington with his wife Yuko in April. The festival will feature the annual kite festival and parade before wrapping up on April 14.
