Organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics will soon begin looking for a breakdancing venue, as it moves closer to inclusion in the international sports competition.
International Olympic Committee members and their executive board endorsed requests from Paris to provisionally include breakdancing as a competition in the 2024 Olympics, although a final decision will come in December 2020.
Paris wants to add three other events to its roster, including skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing, although all three of those are already slated to make debuts at next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet said that the search for a street venue for the breakdancing event would begin Wednesday. If it gets final approval, breakdancing would have 16 competitors in each of the men’s and women’s events.
“It’s important for us … to put sports out of the stadiums and in the heart of the city,” Estanguet said.
