President-elect Trump’s pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, is an “awful, awful” choice, said progressive filmmaker Michael Moore on Wednesday.
Moore, who like DeVos is from Michigan, said that the wealthy Republican activist’s support of charter schools and voucher programs is a threat to kids who attend public school, many of whom live in poverty.
By nominating DeVos, Moore said on MSNBC that Trump is “turning the Education Department over to Amway,” which is the company co-founded by DeVos’ father-in-law, who is worth $5.1 billion, according to Forbes. Moore compared Trump’s choice to appointing one of the GOP megadonor Koch brothers secretary of education.
The DeVos family “have so ruined things in Michigan,” Moore said, and blamed them for helping pushing the state legislature to pass bills later signed into law that make Michigan a “right-to-work” state. Right-to-work laws state workers cannot be forced to join or otherwise financially support a union as a condition of employment.
Moore, who has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics, said Wednesday that a Trump presidency must be stopped and encouraged Americans protesting his Election Night victory because he lost the popular vote to explore all possible avenues to overturn the result.
