Sinead O’Connor’s estate asks Trump campaign to ‘desist’ from using her music

The estate of the late musician Sinead O’Connor has asked former President Donald Trump to stop using her music, specifically the song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” at his campaign rallies.

The former president had used “Nothing Compares 2 U” as one of several songs ahead of a speech he gave at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference on Feb. 24. O’Connor’s estate, in a joint statement with Chrysalis Records, stated it was “an outrage” to learn that Trump was using the song at his campaign rallies, as “Nothing Compares 2 U” is the song O’Connor is most known for.

“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinead would have been disgusted, hurt, and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil,'” the statement read. “As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump, and his associates desist from using her music immediately.”

O’Connor’s comparison to Trump as a “biblical devil” was made in an interview she conducted with Ireland’s Hot Press magazine, which was one of the last in-depth interviews she conducted before her death. The singer added that she was “convinced the man is actually a Satanist,” though she acknowledged that such an assessment sounded “extreme.”

O’Connor died in July 2023 at the age of 56, a year after her son died by suicide in 2022. Southwark Coroner’s Court has ruled that O’Connor died of natural causes.

“Nothing Compares 2 U” was released in 1990 and became the No. 1 song of the year upon release. O’Connor released 10 albums prior to her death, with her second one, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, selling over 7 million copies.

O’Connor’s estate is far from the first to speak out against Trump using their music, as musician Rhianna threatened legal action in 2018 after the former president used “Don’t Stop the Music” at a rally. Similarly, Adele has stated she did not want any of her music used in political campaigns after Trump used her songs “Rolling in the Deep” and “Skyfall” in 2016 rallies.
