Tortilla chip brand Doritos is facing online backlash over a recent collaboration its Spain branch did with a transgender influencer, with some drawing comparisons to the recent Bud Light controversy.
The video, titled “Crunch Talks,” features influencer Samantha Hudson, a biological male who identifies as a woman, talking in Spanish to a woman while eating some Doritos. The partnership between Hudson and Doritos has generated controversy online, as Hudson once posted on social media about wanting to do “thuggish things” to a minor, according to a report.
The release of the video has prompted many social media users to “Bud Light” the Doritos brand, a reference to a partnership that the iconic beer brand did with transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The partnership resulted in calls for a boycott, with the brand losing money in the wake of these calls.
Hudson, who uses social media to discuss beauty and lifestyle tips, has made other controversial statements in the past, claiming to be a Marxist and releasing a song with lyrics critical of the Catholic church. Hudson has also advocated the destruction of the idea of the nuclear family, according to a report.
Last month, it was revealed that Doritos was launching its first international brand platform, which would be titled “For the Bold in Everyone.” According to a press release, the platform encourages people to be triangles in a world of circles and to live as themselves rather than try to fit in.
“Doritos has always been synonymous with ‘bold,’ but we know it’s time to redefine and evolve it’s meaning to continue to drive relevance with new generations,” Head of Global Marketing for Doritos Fernando Kahane said. “Today’s consumers want brands that believe in something. ‘For the Bold in Everyone’ aims to strike the right balance between having a point of view and delivering entertaining and humorous content that is true to the brand and the snack category as a whole.”
