Actor Matthew McConaughey has reflected on the last 10 years of living in Texas, praising the Lone Star State’s “hospitality” since leaving California.
The Interstellar actor revealed that he and his wife, Camila Alves, decided to move to Texas after a family emergency required them to visit his mother, Kay.
“Time slowed down,” McConaughey said of the move in an interview with Southern Living. “The clock was right, the body clock. And part of that is ritual; part of that is just the distance between places and the way people move. But it’s also the hospitality, the courtesy, the common sense, the lack of drama.”

McConaughey revealed that the move to Austin was initially easier for him than for his wife, who was born in Brazil and had only lived in New York and Los Angeles since arriving in the United States. However, Alves stated she soon found herself at home in Texas.
“We can travel all over the world but the moment I land in Texas, the gravity just comes down, my shoulders relax, I know I’m home,” Alves said.

The two moved to Texas in 2014, where they are raising their three children.

McConaughey is one of many celebrities who have left California for greener pastures, with Superman actor Dean Cain leaving the state for Las Vegas. Most recently, actor Sylvester Stallone announced last month that he and his wife, Jennifer Flavin Stallone, would be leaving the state for Florida.
California was the state that had the most residents moving out of state last year, with Florida seeing the most new arrivals.
