Shady Grove train platforms to be fixed

The crumbling platform at the Shady Grove Metro stop soon will stop crumbling, Metro says.

But returning it to a “state of good repair” may slow down commuters while the months-long project is under way.

As part of a $213 million rehabilitation of the Red Line, the transit agency said it will start replacing the deteriorated sections of the platform’s edges with new concrete on Dec. 17.

The work will continue into January, then into spring as the agency replaces the platform tiles with new pavers.

One side of the platform will be closed at a time, forcing trains to share a single track and slowing down riders as they board and exit. The agency said it is focusing on work at the station during the winter months to avoid tourism season.
