Bernie Sanders: ‘I don’t want to commit’ to having a minority or female vice president

Sen. Bernie Sanders refused to say he would make his vice presidential pick a woman or a minority were he to win the Democratic presidential nomination.

“Will you name a running mate before the convention? And will it be a woman?” the Vermont independent was asked Thursday night during a CNN town hall.

“That is a good question, and we may very well do it,” the 78-year-old socialist replied. “And look, let me just say this. This is my promise to you is that my administration, my cabinet will look more like America in terms of gender equality, in terms of racial equality than any administration in American history.”

When pressed again whether he would have a woman or a minority vice president pick, he refused to commit. “Yeah, I don’t want to commit until — I don’t want to commit, but, you know, my inclination is to say yes,” he said. The senator acknowledged that his answer would not “satisfy” everyone.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a fellow 2020 competitor, committed last month to filling half her Cabinet with women and nonbinary people. The Massachusetts Democrat also said she would let a transgender child help choose her head of the Department of Education.
