Oscars 2024: Kimmel jokingly compares Emma Stone’s performance to Katie Britt’s State of the Union rebuttal

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Sen. Katie Britt’s (R-AL) State of the Union rebuttal, which has been criticized by many in the days since it aired.

While hosting the annual movie awards show on Sunday night, Kimmel discussed the performance of actress Emma Stone, who later in the evening won the award for Best Actress for her performance in the film Poor Things. The film is about a woman named Bella Baxter, played by Stone, who is brought back to life by swapping her brain for the brain of her unborn child. Kimmel jokingly compared her performance to Britt’s rebuttal on Thursday evening.

“Emma, you are so unbelievably great in Poor Things,” Kimmel said. “Emma played an adult woman with the brain of a child, like the lady who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union on Thursday night.”

Britt, who gave the Republican Party’s rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s annual State of the Union speech, has received criticism for her delivery and content shared, including a story she told about meeting a sex trafficking victim when she was discussing Biden’s border policies. Reports have since circulated that Britt’s story did not take place during Biden’s presidency, prompting accusations the Alabama senator was being dishonest.

Britt has since brushed off the criticism she has received, explaining that the sex trafficking victim she met had revealed to her what various cartels are doing and why her story is imperative to securing the southern border.

Among Britt’s critics was podcast host Megyn Kelly, who described the rebuttal as “total cringe,” noting that Britt appeared to be “auditioning for a show on Lifetime.” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) also joked about Britt, claiming she was “robbed” of the Best Actress award.

Britt’s rebuttal was not the only time Kimmel poked fun at the current political landscape. He also read aloud a social media post from former President Donald Trump, who asked if there had been “a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars.” Kimmel joked that he was surprised the former president was still awake, questioning if it was past Trump’s “jail time,” referencing Trump’s numerous indictments.
