MICROSOFT’S SOLUTION TO DEALING WITH COMPETITING GAMING DEVICES? EMBRACE THEM.
XBOX SMARTGLASS IS NEW SOFTWARE THAT WILL ALLOW XBOX 360 USERS TO STREAM AND SHARE CONTENT ACROSS SMARTPHONES, TABLETS AND TVS.
[SOT/:Phil Spencer/Microsoft Game Studios head]
“When we look in family rooms today, what we see are people looking at multiple screens. They’re watching TV, they’ve got their phone out, they’ve got their slate out. And we looked at this as an opportunity with Xbox Live, as a social service across all of these screens to build connected experiences.”
THAT MEANS AN APPLE IPHONE CAN BE USED AS A REMOTE CONTROL FOR INTERNET EXPLORER ON THE TV SCREEN. AND ANDROID TABLETS CAN SHOW SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION TO ACCOMPANY AN ON-SCREEN MOVIE.
[SOT/:Phil Spencer/Microsoft Game Studios head]
“We understand that in a service-based world you have to support all of the screens that people have. We’re going to do a great job to ensure that we show up on Windows and Windows Phone in an incredibly deep way, and those teams are eager to work together. But we have to be on all the screens that you own and other people own as well.”
AND WHEN IT CAME TO GAMES, MICROSOFT PULLED OUT ALL THE STOPS WITH NEW VERSIONS OF “HALO” “FORZA” AND “MADDEN NFL 13.”
BUT SOUTH PARK CREATORS TREY PARKER AND MATT STONE WERE ON HAND TO MAKE SURE THE’R NEWEST GAME “SOUTH PARK: THE STICK OF TRUTH” GOT THE MOST ATTENTION.
THEY WEREN’T MUCH FOR THE SMARTGLASS SOFTWARE.
[Notes:sot: Matt Parker/’South Park’ creator:]
“How many times have you been watching an episode of ‘South Park’ and thought, ‘I’d like to watch this on my television, while hooked into my mobile device, which is being controlled by my tablet device, which is hooked into my oven – all while sitting in the refrigerator. Well, we’re not doing that. We’re just doing this game.”
E3 IS A BIG PUSH FOR MICROSOFT TO TRY AND DOMINATE THE LIVING ROOM. THE COMPANY ALSO ANNOUNCED IT SECURED 35 NEW PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE LIKES OF THE NBA, NHL, UNIVISION AND VIACOM TO PROVIDE CONTENT ON XBOX 360.
