House passes final spending bills over Republican opposition

The House of Representatives passed the remainder of its annual appropriations bills on Friday, marking the first step toward avoiding a shutdown just hours before federal funding is set to lapse for a slew of government agencies.

Lawmakers passed the $1.2 trillion spending bill in a 286-134 vote, overcoming the two-thirds threshold needed to advance from the lower chamber. The legislation managed to clear the House despite strong opposition from Republican lawmakers, with less than half of the GOP conference supporting the measure.
