Paul Ryan super PAC dumps more money into Georgia special

The super PAC aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan is investing another $3.5 million in the Georgia runoff, a clear sign that the GOP is worried about holding the conservative-leaning seat.

Congressional Leadership Fund is spending $2.5 million on television advertising, to begin in the Atlanta media market on May 10, plus continuing its robust voter turnout program from round one of the special election. Democrat Jon Ossoff came just two points shy of winning Georgia’s 6th Congressional District outright. Republicans have controlled the seat since 1979.

“CLF’s work to define Jon Ossoff has only just begun,” the super PAC’s executive director, Corry Bliss, said in a statement.

The Republican candidate in the June 20 runoff is former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel. She is favored, but Democrats are pouring resources into the race, sensing an upset opportunity. The district voted only narrowly for President Trump over Hillary Clinton in November, lending credence to how competitive the suburban Atlanta seat has become.

In addition to advertising on television, CLF plans to knock on more than 200,000 doors, plus target Republicans and conservative independents with direct mail and digital advertising. This latest investment by CLF puts its total commitment in Georgia 6 at $6.5 million.

Trump and Ryan are both set to visit the district to boost Handel’s prospects.
