Senate Democrats are demanding the Republican majority set up two separate briefings for lawmakers to question Justice Department officials about the decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.
Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., went to the Senate floor Thursday and said Democrats want two “separate all-senators briefings” with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Schumer said he wants an answer from McConnell by the end of the day, although a Schumer aide would not say what the Democrats would do if they don’t get an answer by then.
Schumer said the two separate meetings with Sessions and his top deputy are needed because there are “two storylines” coming from the White House about Comey’s firing.
Schumer reiterated his demand for the appointment of a special prosecutor “by a nonpolitical appointee at the Department of Justice,” in other words, someone who isn’t Rosenstein, and a meeting with Comey.
“This will help us get a hold on what happened, would explain why and guide us in what to do next,” Schumer said.
Democrats said they believe Comey was fired in response to the FBI’s probe into alleged connections between the Trump campaign and Russia.
