UPDATED: Trump’s ‘infested’ tweets echoed Fox News segment on filthy conditions in Elijah Cummings’ district

An hour before President Trump called Rep. Elijah Cummings’ Maryland congressional district a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,” Fox News aired a segment that highlighted filthy conditions in parts of Baltimore.

Kimberly Klacik, a Republican strategist and Fox News contributor, appeared on Fox and Friends Saturday to talk about her findings of the conditions of the district Cummings represents and share footage of the area.

“There is a crisis at the border, but there’s also a crisis in Baltimore,” Klacik said. “Congressman Cummings represents the most dangerous district in America.”

“The conditions in his own district … are atrocious,” she added while the segment showed footage from the district with homes and sidewalks filled with trash.

Trump, who favors Fox News above all other cable news stations, appeared to have seen Klacik’s work, as his tweets echoed much of what she said, including mentioning that the mess was attracting rodents in West Baltimore.

“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous,” Trump tweeted Saturday morning. His district is considered the Worst in the USA as proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”

Trump’s attack on Cummings and his district prompted swift reprisals, including accusations of racism as Cummings is black and represents a majority-black district. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said, “We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.”

Trump’s claim that Cummings’ district in Maryland was “more dangerous” than the U.S.-Mexico border comes after the chairman of the House Oversight Committee went ballistic during a congressional hearing on border conditions.

“We are the greatest country in the world. We are the ones that can go anywhere in the world and save people, make sure they have diapers, make sure they have toothbrushes, make sure they’re not laying around defecating in some silver paper,” Cummings said in a hearing a week ago.

“Come on. We’re better than that. And I don’t want us to lose sight of that. When we are dancing with the angels, these children will be dealing with the issues that have been presented to them. How do you say to a two-year-old, ‘Your mother, we can’t find your mother, but we can find her keys. We can find her keys. Got your mama’s keys?’ So, I just think we can do better. And we can go on and on and on, but I’m hoping that we will see some immediate improvements. I just want to see an improvement.”

After Trump claimed Cummings’ district in Maryland was “more dangerous” than the U.S.-Mexico border, the Democratic leader defended his record of working for his constituents.

In response to Trump’s tweets, Klacik, who is black and a Baltimore native, praised Trump for citing her work.

“The President saw my work. This just made my day,” Klacik said Saturday. She also posted several clips of the footage she took of the Maryland’s 7th Congressional District.

“Let’s continue to expose the truth. This is a neighborhood filled w/families that have small children. West Baltimore is filled with trash thanks to dumping. A problem city officials should have addressed years ago. This is @RepCummings district,” Klacik said, tagging the president in her tweet.

Klacik slammed criticism of her footage as racist, pointing the finger specifically at Victor Blackwell’s segment on CNN.

“It is so sad to see @VictorBlackwell & @CNN turn the light currently shining on #WestBaltimore into a race issue. This could result in a positive change. @RepCummings could help get his district in order. Listen to one of his constituents explain the ‘rats & rodent’ problem,” she said.

Trump later escalated his feud with Cummings by tweeting a clip from Klacik’s reporting Saturday evening and claiming that Cummings is abusing his congressional power of oversight.
