Nearly half of young Democrats say the US is not among greatest countries: Poll

Nearly half of young Democratic respondents do not believe the United States is one of the greatest nations in the world, according to a recent survey.

A poll from Pew Research revealed that 47% of Democrats or Democratic-leaning individuals ages 18 to 29 said that other countries were better than the U.S. Forty-eight percent reported that the U.S. was “one of the greatest countries, along with others.” Only 5% of the demographic group said America was the greatest country.

Of the Republicans or Republican-leaning respondents in the same age bracket, just 19% did not include the U.S. among the greatest country, while 34% deemed the U.S. the greatest country.

In total, 24% of those who participated in the poll listed the U.S. as the greatest country and 55% included the U.S. among the greatest countries. Just 21% said the U.S. should not be listed among the world’s great nations. Young people were significantly more likely than older respondents to say that the U.S. is not among the greatest countries, with just 9% of those over 65 years excluding America from the top nations.

Young respondents also found it acceptable if the U.S. were to be replaced by another country as the most powerful military on the planet. Respondents under 29 years were the only age group to have plurality acceptance of another country taking over the responsibility of having the most powerful military. In total, 61% found it necessary that the U.S. remains the world’s military superpower.
