Steve Eldridge: White’s Ferry needs to think of its commuters

Published

As much as I enjoy a free spirit, I hope that the owner of White’s Ferry is careful as he tries to go toe-to-toe with the Coast Guard. So far, the owner has been very cavalier about thumbing his nose at the feds, but — while I’m sure he’s having a good time — he needs to think of the hundreds of people in Maryland and Virginia who really rely on the ferry aspart of the local transportation system.

The people who drive on Route 15 across the bridge at Point of Rocks should be having similar thoughts because those extra cars, and pick-ups and SUVs will create a real mess on that winding two-lane road if the ferry gets shut down. It seems to me that it would take an awful lot of passengers and a very mild winter to make up the tens of thousands of dollars that are being discussed as fines for the two or three violations to date.
