Each week Sirius XM and the Washington Examiner partner together to bring you Mainstreet Meets the Beltway with Salena Zito. This week on the show, Zito speaks with Sens. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Washington Examiner’s David Drucker.
Sen. Bob Casey is the first Democrat in Pennsylvania history to win three consecutive terms. His first priority in the Senate is one plenty of constituents agree on: infrastructure. Casey is displeased with the current state of his state’s infrastructure and wants something done. Zito goes on to press the question every senator gets asked nowadays: Is he considering a presidential campaign in 2020? Without giving a solid answer either way, Casey explains why he is considering both running and not running.
Next on the show is a senator from across the aisle, Ron Johnson. The congressman from Wisconsin hails from the heart of the tea party movement 10 years ago. Johnson tells the story of his first Senate campaign and how the Republican movement influenced him to make his way to Washington. According to the senator, in Wisconsin the outside movements in politics (tea party, libertarians, etc.) work together under the Republican banner to form a unified base.
And last but not least to call in to Mainstreet Meets the Beltway is Zito’s own coworker, David Drucker. Serving as the Washington Examiner’s senior political correspondent, Drucker spends a large amount of time inside the Capitol. He uses his assignment to gain an edge on predicting who will and will not run in 2020. Zito and Drucker discuss the early announcements of who will be running.
