The New Year starts in less than 24 hours, and several California residents are going into 2023 with some extra pocket cash provided via a state program intended to provide relief from inflation.
The Middle Class Tax Refund, giving residents up to $1,050, has been sent out to certain eligible Californians since Dec. 19 and has continued to be issued all the way through Saturday. The final waves of this payment, consisting of direct deposits and state-issued debit cards, are set to be sent by the end of January, according to the state government’s website.
EIGHT HIGH-PROFILE CALIFORNIA LAWS SET TO TAKE EFFECT IN 2023
The recipients who have received this payment over the last few weeks are people who did not receive the Golden State Stimulus, a payment given to Californians in the first half of 2021, and whose last names begin with the letters L through Z. Non-GSS recipients whose last names began with letters A through K already received their payment between Dec. 5 and Dec. 17.
The others still waiting for this payment are direct deposit recipients who changed their banking information after they filed their 2020 tax returns. They will receive their payment sometime between Dec. 17 and Jan. 14.
To qualify for this payment, applicants must have been residents of California for at least six months during the 2020 tax year, filed their 2020 taxes by Oct. 15, 2021, and earned less than $250,000 a year for single filers or less than $500,000 a year for couples.
California residents who were deemed eligible to be claimed as dependents for taxes in 2020 are not eligible for this offer.
These payments will be made via direct deposit to any taxpayer who filed their 2020 state tax returns online and received their tax refunds by direct deposit.
Single filers who make between $125,000 and $250,000 a year with no dependents will receive a payment of $200, a lower payment compared to what other filers may get. Married filers who make $150,000 or less and have dependents will receive the highest payment available from this refund at $1,050.
Middle Class Tax Refund debit card payments will be mailed to everyone else who qualifies for this payment, according to California’s Franchise Tax Board.
