Portland shooting: Gunman dead, security guard killed in Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital active shooter event

The Portland Police Bureau confirmed a gunman who prompted a lockdown at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center Saturday afternoon is dead, following an exchange of gunfire with officers.

Authorities said that the shooter fled the hospital after fatally shooting a security guard, resulting in an hours-long manhunt.

According to officials, the victim, identified as Bobby Smallwood, died as a result of trauma sustained during the incident despite life-saving efforts.

“Words cannot express the profound grief we are experiencing,” Legacy Health president and CEO Kathryn Correia said. “We offer our unwavering support to Bobby’s loved ones, to our patients in our care, to the staff at Legacy Good Samaritan and to all of our employees and providers suffering today.”

An earlier news release from police stated the Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were both responding to the incident at the hospital, located in northwest Portland, Oregon, around 11 a.m. PDT.

Legacy Health also confirmed the active shooter event, and urged people to avoid the area in a post to social media.

Portland Fire Bureau stated in a tweet that fire crews were on scene and assisting in the emergency room.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said he was receiving updates from authorities and would continue to provide information about the active investigation.

Bus services were briefly interrupted due to the police activity, but resumed later Saturday afternoon.

The identity of the deceased gunman has not yet been released.
