Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled on Tuesday to headline a fundraiser for Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., who is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for possible insider trading in violation of federal law.
The luncheon event is raising cash for Collins Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee comprised of the congressman’s re-election campaign and his political action committee. According to a copy of the invitation, donors are invited to contribute up to $20,000 to purchase an entire table of eight. Individuals that write checks for $10,000 or more are invited to join a special reception with Pence, and take a photograph with the vice president.
Collins was among the first Republicans in Congress to endorse President Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. Pence headlining the Western New York congressman’s fundraiser is about the White House effort to reward loyalists for their ongoing help in promoting Trump and his agenda.
Long scheduled, the event happens to come just days after the issuance of a report from the nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics that detailed how Collins might have used his government office to facilitate the development of a drug manufactured by the company on whose corporate board he serves.
As reported by CNN, the OCE concluded in a report that Collins’ actions merit investigation because he “took official actions or requested official actions that would assist a single entity in which he had a significant financial interest.” Collins has denied any wrongdoing.
“Throughout my tenure in Congress I have followed all rules and ethical guidelines when it comes to my personal investments. I was elected to Congress based upon my success in the private sector, and my willingness to use that experience every day to facilitate an environment that creates economic opportunity and jobs. I thank the House Ethics Committee for their meticulous review of this case and for the tough work they do to hold all Members of Congress accountable to the highest standards of conduct,” he said in a statement.
Pence’s press secretary did not respond to an email requesting comment.
