UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — State agencies are seeking public comment on proposals to convert the northern part of the Adirondack tourist train corridor to a recreational trail and upgrade sightseeing train service on the southern part.
The state-owned rail corridor runs 119 miles from the Utica area to Lake Placid. Much of the corridor has become too deteriorated for train service over the years and a trail advocacy group has been calling for the tracks to be removed to make a multi-use biking, hiking and snowmobiling trail. Railroad advocates want the state to renovate the tracks instead.
Public hearings are scheduled Oct. 28 in Utica; Oct. 29 in Old Forge; Nov. 6 in Tupper Lake; and Nov. 7 in Lake Placid.
The agencies (http://on.ny.gov/1rU8C5q ) are taking comments until Dec. 15.
