Five Maryland toll bridges, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, will get $11 million worth of security upgrades to help ward off terrorists.

The upgrades include new lighting, sensors for detecting parked vehicles and cameras, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Construction is expected to start this winter and last 18 months. Along with the Bay Bridge, the Key, Nice, Tydings and Hatem bridges will be updated.
A 2005 report showed that a terrorist attack on Maryland bridges could cause extensive casualties and cripple transportation and commerce, according to the Sun.
Maryland Transportation Authority spokespeople were unable to comment for this article, because they are on state-mandated holiday, according to a spokeswoman.
