Ivanka Trump says she openly shares her views with her father, but rejects the notion that she is a key decision-maker in the West Wing.
“I have my views and I share them candidly,” Ivanka told Dr. Mehmet Oz in an interview that will air Thursday. “And as a daughter I have the latitude to do that. But I also respect the process that my father is now president. And the American people elected him based on his agenda. And my job isn’t to undermine that agenda.”
The president’s daughter, who also serves as one as his top advisers, says she rejects the idea she must serve as a “voice of moderation” in his administration and during his more outspoken moments.
“Where I disagree with the agenda, I will share it with him quietly. I don’t view it as my obligation to moderate. And I don’t think anyone working for a sitting president should see themselves in that capacity,” she said.
Ivanka noted her father was elected by the American people because he ran on a specific agenda and it is her job to advance it, not undercut it.
“I also respect the process and my father is now president and the American people elected him based on his agenda and my job isn’t to undermine that agenda,” Trump added. “It’s to embrace the areas where there’s commonality and there are so many areas.”
She said her goal within the administration is to spur “the growth of women entrepreneurs.”
In the interview, Ivanka also revealed her own personal struggles with post-partum depression following the birth of each of her three children.
“It was very — it was a very challenging, emotional time for me because I felt like I was not living up to my potential as a parent or as an entrepreneur and an executive. And I had had such easy pregnancies, that in some way the juxtaposition hit me even harder,” Ivanka told Dr. Oz.
Her decision to share her personal fight against post-partum, she says, was rooted in just how many parents are impacted by it and how “incredibly important” the issue is to her.
“Look, I consider myself a very hard-charging person, I am ambitious, I’m passionate, I’m driven but this is something that affects parents all over the country,” she added.
