DNC chair ‘deeply concerned’ by Sanders supporters in Nevada

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said she was “deeply concerned” about the behavior of Bernie Sanders supporters after Nevada Democrats filed a complaint about their “explosive” behavior at their state convention.

“We are deeply concerned about the troubling details laid out in the letter from the Nevada Democratic Party,” Wasserman Schultz wrote in a statement on Tuesday, “Our democracy is undermined any time threats, intimidation, physical violence or damage to property are present. If there are legitimate concerns, they must be addressed in an orderly, civil and peaceful manner.”

The Democratic leader said that the party would be reaching out to both the Clinton and Sanders’ campaigns to stand with the DNC in denouncing the behavior of the Sander supporters, who heckled and verbally attacked Nevada state party chairwoman Roberta Lange over their rules about superdelegates.

On Monday the Nevada Democratic Party wrote in a letter to the DNC that they worried the actions of local Sanders supporters at their state convention were “harbingers of things to come as Democrats gather in Philadelphia in July for our National Convention.”

“The rules governing the Democratic Party delegate selection process have been in place for decades and the specific procedures for this cycle were agreed upon in 2014,” Wasserman Schultz wrote in response. “There is no excuse for what happened in Nevada, and it is incumbent upon all of us in positions of leadership to speak out.”
