MoveOn.Org: A Wholly-Owned Subsidiary of the Democratic Party

David Sirota makes an interesting observation about the change that has come over MoveOn.org:

In effectively OK-ing the VP nomination of a politician who has consistently voted against Moveon’s organizational mission, the Moveon leadership lets us in on the secret that I reported in my book: namely that Moveon today operates first and foremost as a partisan appendage. Instead of using the VP question – and the presidential election as a whole – as an instrument to build the antiwar movement, Moveon’s quote suggests the organization is willing to go along with almost anyone Obama chooses, regardless of how their career has undermined that movement, regardless of whether Bayh’s backers are citing his potential nomination as proof that the Democratic Party should reject the movement Moveon purports to champion.

One of the important reasons that the Left became so much better organized than the Right online was that liberal activists felt that their Washington leadership was caving in to Republicans on key issues — such as Iraq and the Patriot Act. They flocked to entities like MoveOn, DailyKos, and others as a way of organizing to force DC Democrats to respond to them. And to a large degree, it worked — although the anti-war Left has little to show for it. Now that Iraq, the Patriot Act, and related issues are fading as issues however, the leadership of MoveOn has decided to make winning the White House a priority over ideological purity. Jon Henke recalls the words of Pat Buchanan: “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” What happens when their loyal donors realize that their money is no longer buying what they wanted?
