Investigation into Charlie Sheen escort nearly done, Lanier says

A “middle manager” signed off on the police escort for actor Charlie Sheen, D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier told WTOP radio Thursday morning.

“I believe I know who gave the authorization, it was a middle manager, at the lieutenant rank,” she said on WTOP’s “Ask the Chief” segment. “The investigation is not complete. I know who took part in the escort. Nobody is trying to hide anything, they’re being very involved.”

Lanier said the department is nearly done with its investigation into the incident that went viral when Sheen posted messages about it on Twitter.

She said officers violated a department policy by not following guidelines to get approval for the escort from an assistant police chief.

“It’s possible police officers would violate policy when they’re starstruck by celebrities from out of town,” Lanier said. “They’re people just like everybody.”

Last week, The Washington Examiner reported how a policy exists that allows D.C. police to transport “non-dignitaries.”
