Senator deplores being ‘denied access’ by John Durham

A U.S. senator complained how special counsel John Durham “denied” the public information from the politically charged inquiry into the Russia investigation.

Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, made the point Wednesday night as he argued against the prospect of Attorney General Merrick Garland appointing a special counsel to take the lead in investigating Hunter Biden’s shady foreign business affairs.

“The only problem the special counsel appointed by Merrick Garland is I won’t have any faith in him,” Johnson told Fox News host Sean Hannity, who noted the likes of Ken Starr and criminal defense attorney Jonathan Turley have vouched for such an appointment over concerns about independence.

Johnson turned his focus to Durham, who is roughly three years into his criminal investigation. Although the senator stressed the prosecutor has “high integrity,” he also bemoaned how long Durham is taking “to get the information out.”

“We were denied access to the information during the John Durham probe, so there is a real problem with the special counsel,” Johnson added.

Durham is in the midst of two prosecutions, legal fights playing out in the public view, but most of his inquiry into the conduct and origins of the Russia investigation remains shrouded in mystery.

Durham is expected to release a report at the end of the endeavor. But some, including former President Donald Trump, have long griped that he did not disclose to the public at least some findings sooner, especially before the 2020 election.

Hunter Biden, the 52-year-old son of the president, is under federal investigation for tax and other financial issues, an effort led by David Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware. Biden has maintained he will be cleared of wrongdoing, while the White House has stressed President Joe Biden has no involvement in the matter.

Johnson, who is one of the GOP investigators who has investigated Hunter Biden and raised concerns about influence peddling, credited journalists with “exposing” the controversy.
